Kannada isn't just a language; it's the key to timeless culture: German writer Haeuslmeier
Kannada isn't just a language; it's a key to a timeless culture, believes German writer Michael 'Mike' Haeuslmeier, who has spent decades exploring Karnataka's rich history. Speaking to Bangalore Times about the power of language during a recent visit to the city, he said, "Without language, we wouldn't be where we are today." He adds that he discovered Karnataka's rich history and poetic depth through translation. "One word in Kannada often needs a full sentence in German, but that challenge brought the language alive for me. Language preserves memory, heritage, and identity," he says. Excerpts from a conversation:
'WHILE MYTHS ARE REMEMBERED, THE REAL HISTORY IS FADING'
During my many tours in India, I became fascinated by its history. I noticed that while myths were remembered, the real history was fading. If I asked what a monument was, nobody could really tell me. They knew the myths, but not the real history. This led me to Karnataka: Vijayanagara—once the world's richest empire, now scattered in the ruins of Hampi. Intrigued, I decided to bring Krishnadevaraya, the empire’s most celebrated ruler, back to life in my book. By blending meticulous research with storytelling, I hope to make Karnataka’s incredible history accessible to the world. Krishnadevaraya was remarkable — politically astute, culturally literate, and tolerant of religion. Accounts from Portuguese travellers’ diaries show he was a leader who balanced military prowess with intellect and a love for poetry.
'YOUR HISTORY IS SOMETHING TO CARRY WITH PRIDE'
It's so important for people everywhere to feel proud of their history. For example, Krishnadevaraya was one of the greatest rulers of his time, and his story deserves to be remembered not just in Karnataka but across the world. I hope to bring this legacy to international readers because themes like leadership, courage, and cultural exchange are universal. Your history is something to carry with pride.

It is shameful that a debate has ensued between Tamil and Kannada. Rather than appreciating the German author, we are making a mockery of ourselves. Wake-up friends and be proud Indians first.Read allPost comment
