Hyrox is Bengaluru’s latest fitness obsession
‘HYROX IS A PERFECT BALANCE OF SIMPLICITY AND CHALLENGE’
For Shwetambari Shetty, a fitness expert in Bengaluru, the most important part of Hyrox is its simplicity. “It consists of movements that absolutely anybody can do. Of course, a beginner needs some training, but the exercises are easy to learn. Hyrox is a great combination of running with strength and endurance training, making it simple, yet challenging,” she says. Sujit Nair, a growth professional in Bengaluru, calls Hyrox the perfect storm of fitness challenges. “I’ve done endurance and strength events before, including half marathons, but Hyrox blends both into one continuous test. The format is structured, yet it pushes you in unexpected ways. And the community is a global tribe that shows up to suffer together, which is strangely nice,” he shares.
People are approaching Hyrox not just to win, but to understand their fitness levels
WHAT IS HYROX?
Popular for its hybrid, endurance-oriented design, Hyrox includes workouts and running, weaving them into an 8km run. Alternating between running and a functional workout station. The eight workout stations are: Ski Erg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jump, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges, and Wall Balls. Each training cycle is carefully planned to include power, mobility, agility and recovery.
‘HYROX REWARDS PREPARATION’
As far as Hyrox is concerned, Sujit urges newcomers not to overcomplicate things: “All you need is a solid base of running and functional strength, plus practice with transitions. Hyrox is about pacing effort over time — not one heroic moment, but consistent grit.”
Varun stresses the importance of running: “It’s 60–70% of Hyrox. If you can run well and control your heart rate, you’ll be fine.” Vineeta adds that the key is simply showing up: “Start slow, train in pairs or relay groups. Once you feel the buzz of training together and chase your personal best, it becomes more fun and empowering than intimidating.”
‘IT GOES BEYOND THE USUAL GYM ROUTINE’
“Bengaluru already has an inspiring mix of running clubs, cycling groups, and fitness communities. Hyrox adds to that by offering a bridge between all training styles. Runners get stronger, gym-goers build endurance, and everyday athletes find a supportive group energy. It brings different worlds together under one roof, making “fitness for all” more real and achievable,” says Veenita Johnson, a Hyrox coach and consultant. To this, Sujit adds, “People in the city thrive on challenges and push each other beyond perceived limits. There’s pride in being part of something bigger than a typical gym routine.”
“India, post-pandemic, is opening up to fitness. People are going to good coaches and gyms, and looking at health differently,” Shweta observes, and adds, “Social media has also helped push Hyrox, and the best part is that people are approaching it not just to win, but to understand their fitness levels.” Varun Anand, a Bengaluru-based footwear designer, feels Hyrox in India is still evolving. “Right now, it feels like a trend, almost a social media event. Some foreign athletes even said they’d never seen so many people walking in a Hyrox. But like running culture in India, it can grow — hopefully into something true to its essence, not just a fad,” he says.
In Hyrox, it’s about respecting the fact that everyone fought through the same wall as you did. Whether you’re elite or a first-timer, it doesn’t matter. If you’ve shown up and finished, it proves your willpower, strength, and mental grit
