An artistic offering through Kathak to Mahatma Gandhi

On Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, a two-day dance festival was organised by Mahatma Gandhi Mission and Mahagami Gurukul in Aurangabad recently. The program was beautifully presented with a

Kathak

performance by dancer Parwati Dutta as part of Gandhi Parv organised by Mahagami. She presented a soulful performance based on Raag Gandhi Malhar which was composed by Pt. Kumar Gandharv as tribute to Gandhiji. The Raag was sung by Bhuvnesh Komkali.

Parwati Dutta began her performance with a prayer through alaap and then a Khayal

bandish

in Raag Gandhi Malhar. The lyrics were in praise of Gandhiji -Tum ho Dheer, Sanjeevan Bharat ke. The composition in drut ektaal was a reminder of Gandhiji’s deep faith in universal harmony, truth, ahimsa and compassion. The Kathak performance was inspired by abstract paintings of renowned painter Sayed Haider Raza which again were painted by him as tribute to Gandhiji. She concluded her performance with rendition of Kabir

bhajan

.
