Coining a new word was Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Renuka Choudhary who told Kirron Kher: You’re an actress, I’m a reactress. The minister who doesn’t mince her words and the forthright filmstar were there at JW Marriott on Saturday night to celebrate the contribution of women in Indian cinema with a coffee table book.

There was much banter and backchat between the two and when a fellow guest jokingly made a dig at their girth, as compared to the hourglass figures of today’s heroines, the merry minister saying, Everything large is wonderful. Today, you see movies in 70 mm, not 16 mm. Kirron then spoke of the earthy, full, sensual women in the early films. Renuka struck a friendly blow to men saying, We not only cook at home, we also cook their goose.
She also struck on serious issues like crimes against women (Where on earth is it fashionable to deep-fry your wife for dinner?) and got to the heart of the truth by saying, Mahatma Gandhi used the truth as a revolver of revolution.
Keenly following the deep discussion were Tanishaa looking elegant in a sari, Mona Singh in all-black ensemble, designers Neeta Lulla, Anna Singh and Narendra Kumar Ahmed, Pradeep Hirani of Kimaya, co-sponsors for the event, theatre actress Konkana Bakshi and dimpled actress Gul Panag.
Later, guests chatted over cocktails and enjoyed their delightful dinner with a mix of biryani, bheja fry, duck, dal and pasta. They also leafed through the book, fondly remembering the actresses of the yesteryears. Devika Rani, Nadira, Smita Patil, Madhubala, Nutan, Hema Malini were all there in black-and-white and colour along with the recent crop of Bollywood babes.
A thumbs up for women, this one!
