Alliance Francaise in Kolkata offers the city a Western Classical music saga

Alliance Francaise Du Bengale and Victoria Memorial in association with the Consulate of France in Kolkata hosted the opening of the third edition of the Western Classical Music Festival which has drawn a crowd of over 5,000 people in its first two editions. The season opened with the performance of French pianist Kim Barbier. The renowned pianist opened the season with Barbier’s solo recital titled Shadow and Light which took listeners on a journey through the expressive contrasts of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and Debussy’s ethereal compositions. This recital at the Eastern Quadrangle of Victoria Memorial Hall exposed the audience to music’s most profound contrasts—from the melancholy of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata to the dreamlike quality of Debussy’s compositions. With each note, Barbier captured the shifting moods of life—melancholy, hope, mystery, and joy—creating a unique and emotional experience.

Speaking about the third edition of the Western Classical Music festival, Didier Talpain, the Consul general of France in Kolkata said, “It's a real pleasure to blow out the third candle of our concert Season at the Victoria Memorial Hall. It's a pleasure to pay threefold tribute to loyalty, equality and diversity. Several hundred music lovers came every concert evening to gather within the prestigious walls of Kolkata's most emblematic monument. Throughout the ten concerts of the last two seasons, we have been able to listen to some great talents who have presented the great Western repertoire in high-end interpretations, even when the weather conditions were complicated. Loyalty, equality and diversity will once again be the watchwords of the coming season. I have no doubt it will bring us all a great deal of pleasure.” To this, Nicolas Facino, director, Alliance Francaise Du Bengale added, “In the heart of Kolkata, India’s cultural capital, the Western Classical Music Festival returns like an unbroken melody, a testament to music’s boundless language. This third edition, vibrant with three orchestras, a mesmerizing piano recital by Kim Barbier, and a harmonious trio, transcends borders and- speaks to the soul—a celebration of art that echoes far beyond the stage.”
