A slice of Italy and a dash of nostalgia as Kolkata rekindles its love for the sixties
It was time travel of sorts on Sunday, as the Consulate of Italy in Kolkata hosted a dinner to honour the legacy of Firpo’s and its founder Angelo. Curated by Argha Sen at a legacy five-star hotel in Chowringhee, the evening saw classic dishes and beverages inspired by the iconic diner and nightlife venue served to a smattering of the city’s glitterati, who all had stories and anecdotes to share with Dr Enrico De Barbieri, great-grand-nephew of Firpo.
"This evening is a tribute to Firpo and Kolkata. The resto was a symbol of Italian excellence that continues to inspire us"
– Riccardo Dalla Costa
Consul General of Italy in KolkataOn August 12, 1938, the Mayor of Calcutta, Abul Kalam Mohammed Zakariah, hosted a tea party in honour of ‘Rashtrapati Bose’ at Firpo’s. It was attended by prominent citizens, and my grandparents
This evening honours the great Italian A Firpo who contributed immensely to the development of economic and cultural relations between Italy and India
Prafull Aina, executive chef of the property where the event was hosted served dishes from the era and paired it with wines from Italy, curated by Giulia Biscontin. Live music by Calcutta School of Music Quartet and an art exhibition by artist Giovanna Caruso provided the perfect backdrop.
