A fair share of empowerment at Kolkata's Boi Mela

At a press briefing on January 29, the West Bengal Commission for Women highlighted the upcoming activities at the 48th International Kolkata Book Fair. The Commission shared details of their upcoming activities scheduled throughout the Book Fair, including interactive panel discussions, workshops on women’s rights, mental health awareness sessions, and exhibitions showcasing women-centric literature and art. The initiatives aim to engage visitors and foster dialogue on critical issues affecting women in today’s society.

According to the details, on January 31, 2025, inmates from Bankura Jail will present a special prose and poetry session at the pavilion. On February 1, renowned footballer Sanjay Sen will be felicitated, followed by a talk on February 2 by Kakoli Kundu, Officer-in-Charge of the Women’s Cell, Howrah Police Station, on the experiences of trafficked women.

On February 6, rescued girls will participate in a cultural ceremony under the supervision of Kolkata Songbed. Famed singer Iman Chakraborty will be felicitated on February 7, the same day a group of blind women will stage the drama Onno Desh.

Renowned singer Arati Mukherjee will visit the pavilion on February 8, with Kohinoor Sen Barat and his team closing the day with their performance, Esho Basanta Esho.

Additionally, Nari Kontho, the only magazine from the Women’s Commission, will be launched on one of the fair days.



Speaking on the occasion, Leena Gangopadhyay, Chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Women stated, “West Bengal Commission for Women always steps towards empowering women by sharing stories, experiences, and expert insights that resonate with their struggles and aspirations. The International Kolkata Book Fair serves as a perfect platform to launch this initiative and connect with people from all walks of life. During the course of the fair, we have lined up multiple activities to inspire, engage and motivate our women force, we are hopeful that lots of visitors will be coming over to the stall to be a part of the activities.”
