A cultural extravaganza: Two-day festival in Kolkata to celebrate classical arts
This January, Kolkata’s cultural scene will light up with the Sambandh festival, celebrating the rich tradition of Indian classical music and dance. Held over two days at the iconic GD Birla Sabhaghar, the festival promises a blend of awe-inspiring performances by legendary artists and rising stars, all dedicated to the maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain.
On January 11, the evening will begin with Shankar Narayan Swami’s melodic performance, followed by a dynamic collaboration between Pt Ashim Chowdhury on sitar and Pt Arup Chatterjee on tabla, showcasing their masterful command over classical music. The stage will then come alive with the graceful Manipuri nritya by Vidushi Priti Patel, demonstrating devotion through dance. The AsthaNayika performance by the Prerna Centre for Performing Arts, directed by Guru Luna Poddar, will capture the intricate journey of the Nayikas with energetic choreography. The evening will also feature an emotional performance by the promising young dancer Nilopa Maitra, whose portrayal of love and abhinaya is sure to leave a lasting impression.
The festival is a brainchild of Luna Poddar, a renowned dancer and choreographer who founded the Prerna Centre for Performing Arts in 2002. With a vision to revive the Baithaki Culture, she has created a platform that nurtures classical arts and fosters innovation while staying true to tradition. Speaking about the festival, Poddar says, “Sambandh is about creating an ambience that celebrates our long-lost heritage and brings together Indian classical music, dance, and theatre with a touch of innovation.”
Designed by Dinesh Poddar, the lighting will add a magical touch to the performances, further elevating the overall experience.
