Wolf of Wall Street
Critics Rating: ***
Even veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese couldn’t stay away from the world’s renewed interested in jazz and blues. His latest Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer Wolf of Wall Streetis less a cohesive package and more a compilation of jazz-and-blues gems.
Billy Joel, Bo Diddley, Eartha Kitt and Elvis Presley, all feature on the soundtrack. You’ll hear both original classics and modern renditions.
1x1 polls
It’s a get-up-and-dance soundtrack that makes you want to shake your booty. Bang! Bang! by Joe Cuba has a delightful intoxication to it. This is the kind of song that puts you in a bar in 1950s America.
Malcolm McLaren’s Double Dutch celebrates and critiques filthy rich kids at one go. Meth Lab Zoso Sticker by 7Horse is by far one of the best tracks on the soundtrack. There are a bunch of retro pop hits thrown in. Sir Mix-A-Lot’s cult Baby Got Back makes an appearance as does Boom Boom Boom by The Outhere Brothers. The Lemonheads’ Mrs Robinson, Elmore James’ Dust My Broom and Bo Diddley’s Pretty Thing are standouts; they have a nice blend of blues, contemporary, rock and country blues. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings version of Goldfinger is superb. If you want to dance like there’s no tomorrow, this is the record to pick.
