Album : Wish I Was Here (OST) — Various Artistes
Music : Sony Music
Actor-director Zach Braff’s film Wish I Was Here brings indie music to a mainstream audience through contemporary and retro artistes. So Now What by The Shins is catchy and upbeat. Gary Jules does a raspy Cat Stevens with the guitar-driven Broke Window, which you can freely blast on your car stereo for a road trip.
Radical Face sound like a mellower version of Mumford and Sons on folksy rainy day track, The Mute. Bon Iver’s Holocene needs no introduction while the darker Heavenly Father — which appears later on the track list — depicts the main character’s turbulent relationship with his father. The Shining is a bittersweet ballad by indie band Badly Drawn Boy, as is Breathe In by Japanese Wallpaper. Jump Little Children’s Mexico is passable but fun. Title track Wish I Was Here has the unlikely collaboration of Cat Power and Coldplay. The result is a power ballad with simple lyrics and a blend of the two bands’ frontmen’s unique voices. Singer-songwriter Allie Moss is like an innocent Alanis Morissette on Wait It Out. Paul Simon sings The Obvious Child in the tradition of his hit, Crazy Love, arguably the best song on the soundtrack. Aaron Embry sounds like a young Bob Dylan on Raven’s Song. Mend by The Weepies could get you teary eyed, no pun intended! The Head and the Heart deliver a highlight on album closer, No One To Let You Down.
