Why was Katy Perry, an American chosen to sing at King Charles’s Coronation Concert?
People have been speculating about why Katy Perry, an American pop star, was among the few invited to sing at Prince Charlescoronation concert. Both she and fellow American Lionel Richie were the two Americans who sang for the King’s Coronation on Saturday, May 6. Both however, are global ambassadors of two of the King’s favourite charities and have known him for some years.
What was news to us Indians is that Prince Charles and Katy Perry share an India connection.

The two global icons met first during an event in Mumbai in November 2019, when Prince Charles met supporters of a charity he endorses, the British Asian Trust. Katy, then dressed in a pretty floral blue dress, had joined several other prominent supporters to learn more about the charity and later her pictures with the then Prince Charles had been printed in the media.
Katy Perry has been an active part of the British Asian Trust Charity ever since and was soon appointed its global ambassador. It was, therefore, completely natural for her to accept the invitation to be part of the Coronation Concert, where both she and Lionel Richie performed.
The young daughter of Prince William, Princess Charlotte sang along with Katy Perry as she belted out her hit song, ‘Roar’ during the performance. She also sang Firework. The singer was dressed in a long gown for the concert.
Katy Perry had brought her mother along to the coronation and the concert that followed. The two stayed as guests of the royal family at Windsor Castle.
