Tommy DeCarlo: All about the ‘Boston’ superfan who became the band’s lead vocalist
Tommy DeCarlo, lead singer of Boston, passed away at 60.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9, 2026. After being diagnosed with brain cancer last September, he fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end,” his family posted on his social media.
Per USA Today, in September 2025, DeCarlo suddenly suffered a brain bleed and had to have emergency surgery. The doctors found cancer during the operation. He started treatment but ended up back in the hospital after another brain bleed in late fall. After some tough months, he got back on his treatment plan, working with his oncology team.
Even though he spent his last year battling a brutal illness, Tommy DeCarlo’s life played out almost like a rock-and-roll movie. He wasn’t born a rock star; he was a regular guy, a die-hard ‘Boston’ fan who went from singing along to their songs at home to fronting the band on stage. His journey, from working at a hardware store to singing for packed arenas, is one of the most incredible stories in modern rock.
Instead, he ended up in Charlotte, North Carolina, working as a credit manager at Home Depot. By day, he was a regular guy at work. By night, he sang ‘Boston’ songs just for the joy of it.
Things took a turn in 2007 when ‘Boston’s original singer, Brad Delp, passed away. That loss hit DeCarlo hard. Delp had been his idol. Wanting to pay tribute, DeCarlo recorded a song and some Boston covers. His daughter helped him put them on MySpace. Friends said he should send the link to ‘Boston’s management, and so he did.
Turns out, ‘Boston’s founder, Tom Scholz, heard the tracks and was blown away by how much DeCarlo’s voice sounded like Delp’s. Scholz invited DeCarlo to sing at a tribute concert for Delp in ‘Boston’ that year. It didn’t come as a surprise that DeCarlo crushed it. The band asked him to join as lead singer not long after.
Just like that, the fan became the frontman!
From 2007 to 2026, DeCarlo stood front and center for ‘Boston’s touring lineups. Fans really took to him, as his voice was powerful, and he poured his heart into every performance. Filling Brad Delp’s shoes was no small feat, but DeCarlo honored Boston’s legacy and brought his own energy.
Not just on stage, but DeCarlo also sang on ‘Boston’s 2013 album ‘Life, Love & Hope’, the band’s first studio release in more than ten years. He toured all over North America, playing the classics to packed crowds, night after night.
Tommy also released solo music, like his 2022 album ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’. He told his full story in the audiobook ‘Unlikely Rockstar – The Tommy DeCarlo Story’, sharing how he went from fan to frontman.

From a ‘Boston’ superfan to the lead singer
Tommy DeCarlo, the native New Yorker, fell for rock music early, and ‘Boston’ was his favorite. Per Rolling Stone, DeCarlo couldn’t get enough of songs like ‘More Than a Feeling’, ‘Peace of Mind’, and ‘Amanda’. As a teen, he’d belt out Boston tunes and even recorded some covers and wrote his own songs. Still, he never imagined any of it would lead to a music career.Instead, he ended up in Charlotte, North Carolina, working as a credit manager at Home Depot. By day, he was a regular guy at work. In 2012, he started a band, ‘DECARLO’, with his son Tommy Jr. on guitar. They even signed with Frontiers Records and put out an album, ‘Lightning Strikes Twice’, in 2020.Tommy also released solo music, like his 2022 album ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’.
