In The Lord of The Rings trilogy, Pippin is the coolest, funniest hobbit, accompanying Frodo Baggins on his epic quest.
In our country’s EDM (electronic dance music) scene, he's a bearded, slender-bodied virtual music producer who's been living inside the head of his creator, musician Jatin Puri. While you may have heard — and seen — animated artistes and bands like Gorillaz, Crazy Frog and The Archies abroad, Pippin is our own son of the soil.

His debut EP 1010 released this March. Pippin’s signature sound is a blend of post-dubstep, future garage, indie and trip hop, ‘heavy on the bass but still chill and groovy’. He’s inspired by cutting edge electronic acts like Mount Kimbie, Flume and Burial.
He made his debut at a festival in Bangalore last year, where he played his self-produced electronica tracks with live vocals. “However, Pippin’s real breakthrough was when we opened for an electronica festival in Rajasthan last December. He got great feedback from people I respect,” says his 27-year-old creator Jatin, who has been writing, mixing and producing music for over a decade. He is currently based out of New Delhi and has lived in different parts of India and Nigeria.
“I learnt the drums as a kid. I started writing music and singing when I was in school,” says Jatin who began his career in the industry as a lyricist and rapper. He’s a former drummer of psychedelic metal band Another Vertigo Rush. He released an album (Purify) under his own name in 2011, and has been flying solo ever since. Ask Jatin how animated music producer Pippin got his name, and he says, “It came up when I was thinking of re-imaging myself and my music. Pippin was a nickname I had as a kid so it fits and I like the way it sounds. Being Pippin is a lot more fun and interesting because I can tap into my raw creativity and my more experimental side, which I have been avoiding for while. I feel like I have more freedom.”
