Album: Of Monsters and Men — Beneath the Skin

A number of interesting musicians have emerged out of Iceland over the years, and this group continues that trend. This is their sophomore album and so far, has been far more successful than their debut effort, called My Head Is An Animal. This one made its debut in the top 3 of the US album charts.
The opening track of the album, titled Crystals has a beautiful video to go with it (the album’s artwork can also be interpreted as a stylistic representation of the Icelandic countryside). It is a beautiful love song that encourages a couple to not be afraid to completely be themselves with each other. Consider these artfully-written lyrics: “I know I’ll wither so peel away the bark/ Because nothing grows when it is dark/ In spite of all my fears, I can see it all so clear/ I see it all so clear/ Cover your crystal eyes/ And feel the tones that tremble down your spine/ Cover your crystal eyes/ And let your colours bleed and blend with mine.” Frontwoman Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir recently told the foreign media that the lyrics are indeed aimed at parts of the human psyche with specific emphasis on qualities about ourselves that we often don’t examine closely enough. By and large, the music, generously sprinkled with a tinge of quirkiness, comes across as the collective efforts of a cohesive band. This is most clearly evidenced by songs like Wolves Without Teeth, Winter Sound and Black Water. The music itself is well balanced. Rich Costey, (Death Cab for Cutie, Interpol etc) who co-produces the album along with the band, gives the music a more atmospheric tinge. Definitely an album with hipster cred.
