Madonna gets auction of her underwear and letters halted
An impending auction of pop star Madonna's personal items, including a pair of previously worn panties, a letter from prison from her ex-boyfriend, the late rapper Tupac Shakur and a hairbrush containing her hair, was halted by a Manhattan judge on July 19, 2017.

Gotta Have It! Collectibles was ordered by Manhattan state Supreme Court Judge Gerald Leibovitz to pull 22 items from its rock-and-roll-themed auction scheduled for July 20, 2017.

Madonna was "shocked to learn" of the planned online auction of the Tupac letter and had no idea it was no longer in her possession. Thus she sought an emergency court order.

"The fact that I have attained celebrity status as a result of success in my career does not obviate my right to maintain my privacy, including with regard to highly personal items," Madonna said in court papers. "I understand that my DNA could be extracted from a piece of my hair. It is outrageous and grossly offensive that my DNA could be auctioned for sale to the general public."

According to court papers, Tupac’s letter was expected to fetch up to $400,000.

Madonna in the early 1990s dated Tupac, who was one of the best-selling rappers of all time. He died of injuries suffered in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting in 1996.

Tupac ‘s letter to Madonna, which was written in 1995, explained why he broke up with her, saying it was because of her race.

He said dating a black man makes her seem more open and exciting.

He added that due to his image, he would be letting down half of the people who made him who he thought he was, he wrote.

Madonna’s comment about "rehabilitating rappers" had also upset Tupac, according to the letter.
