Seven-time Grammy winner Jacob Collier recently toured India, expressing his deep admiration for the country's culture, music, and energy. He highlighted Mumbai's Tata Theatre as a special place and spoke enthusiastically about Bollywood's universal appeal and his desire to collaborate with AR Rahman.
Seven-time Grammy winner Jacob Collier performed in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi as part of his world tour recently. The British singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, long inspired by Indian soundscapes, cinema and culture, speaks to us about why India remains one of his most favourite places in the world, his love for Mumbai and more.‘When I perform here, the energy is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced’ Talking about how India inspires him, he says, “India means so much to me. It is one of my most favourite places in the whole world on so many different levels. The music of India has inspired me since I was a little kid. The beautiful culinary experience, colours, textures, energy and people have all left an impression on me. Every concert I’ve played here has been a bit of a life-changing experience. When I perform here, the energy is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. You can feel the musical history, and you can feel the love and the gratitude there.”

Jacob’s favourite place in MumbaiThe singer says his visits to Mumbai have always been memorable. One place that is special to him is the Tata Theatre at NCPA. “It’s the first place I ever had a concert in India (2019),” he says, adding, “It was such a life-changing day.
I will always treasure that particular memory of that place. It is one of the most important places in Mumbai for me, but there are so many other places to discover.”‘Bollywood transcends all language barriers’As the conversation turns towards Bollywood, Jacob, who is known for songs like Sleeping On My Dreams, Moon River and Make Me Cry, among others, says, “For Bollywood, the word that comes to mind is joy. There’s so much joy in the dance, sound and storytelling. Bollywood is for everybody, it transcends all language barriers.” Ask him whether he would be ready for a collab if Bollywood came calling, and he says, “Of course. That sounds really great.” And who would he want to work with? “AR Rahman is the first name. That’s the name that’s often mentioned to me. He is like a master of that world. It would be really exciting to be involved in something of that scale,” he signs off.
