Album: Burning Bridges
Artiste: Bon Jovi
Label: Universal
Rating: 3
This album by veteran rock survivors Bon Jovi was reportedly created amidst some difficult circumstances.
For starters, key members Dave Sabo, Alec John Such and Richie Sambora are no longer part of the group. There are now only three members left, namely Jon Bon Jovi, David Bryan and their reliable drummer Tico Torres.
Sambora’s guitar has been likened to being as essential to Bon Jovi’s sound as Slash’s axe-wielding was to Guns ’n Roses. The lead singles of this album are We Don’t Run and Saturday Night Gave Me Sunday Morning, the latter of which apparently has Sambora on co-writing credits. It’s not a bad song at all and you’ll wish that Sambora was there on more tracks on the album. In fact, Jon has gone on record as having said in an interview recently: “It’s songs that weren’t finished, that were finished, a couple of new ones like the one we released as a single (We Don’t Run), It’s sort of a hint as to where we’re going musically, but the new album, the real new album, will be early next year.” Given the vibe under which it was made, the album does sound a bit less exuberant as when compared to their previous works. Heck, you’re not going to get something like Slippery When Wet here... But having been said, this is certainly not an album of cast-offs and old material. It does give the band’s catalogue an interesting dimension. Strong numbers include A Teardrop To The Sea, the ballad Blind Love and of course We Don’t Run. While the album might not be essential for a first-time listener who is looking to explore the band’s music, longtime fans will find some fine moments in here.
