"And it felt right...": Doechii defends her decision of denouncing President Donald Trump at the BET Awards - Deets Inside
Doechii, the ‘DENIAL IS A RIVER’ rapper, states that her denouncing POTUS Donald Trump on an international platform at the BET Awards was the right thing to do. The rapper addressed the mass deportation and ICE raids in Los Angeles, which is highly regarded as a controversial move by the President. In a conversation with British Vogue, Doechii insisted that it was the right thing to do and thought of using her moment appropriately. “I'm not that desensitised, and it felt right. I felt like I needed to use that moment, and they were live, so it wasn't s–t they could do about it,” said Doechii. The 26-year-old added that she was born to do this, referring to her rise to fame despite the pressures to undermine it.

What did Doechii say at the BET Awards?

The BET Awards occurred on June 9, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, when the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids were happening in the area. The movement caused widespread protests and clashes between the protestors and enforcement officers, some of which were happening around the venue, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “As much as I’m honoured by this award, I do want to address what’s happening right now outside of the building. There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order,” she said, before adding, “Trump is using military forces to stop a protest, and I want y’all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us.
Furthermore, Doechii questioned the government for sweeping people out of their families. “I feel it’s my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people, for Black people, for Latino, for trans people, for the people in Gaza,” the ‘Persuasive’ rapper stated, adding that she stands with her brothers and sisters, and certainly against hate.
