Story: A determined Yeti embarks on a journey as he explores the world beyond his small village to prove to his community that humans do exist.

Review: Adapted from the book Yeti Tracks by Sergio Pablos, Smallfoot explores the world of the Yetis — often referred to as mythical creatures because of the ambiguity that surrounds their existence. In the film, the Yeti community leads a sheltered life, nestled away on a snowy mountain top, above the clouds in the Himalayas. Migo (voiceover Channing Tatum) is a happy-go-lucky Yeti, who is happy to follow his father Dorgle’s (voiceover Danny DeVito) footsteps in becoming the village’s future gong ringer. One day he accidentally runs into a human and is amazed to discover that a ‘smallfoot’ really does exist. The news is met with scepticism and incredulity by the tribe’s leader Stonekeeper (voiceover Common), who banishes Migo from the village. The rest of the film follows the gentle giant’s journey as he searches for the elusive smallfoot and the adventures undergoes as he discovers humans and their way of life.

The unlikely friendship between Migo and the human Percy (voiceover James Corden) is heart-warming as both come to terms with the other’s quirks and character traits, and discover the meaning of true friendship. Director Karey Kirkpatrick has given enough screen space to the supporting characters as well — Migo’s supportive friends Meechee (voiceover Zendaya), Fleem (voiceover Ely Henry) and Gwangi (LeBron James) — who have some of the funniest lines in the movie.

The animation is delightful without being over the top and the makers give out two messages to children — the film’s main audience — that if you persevere and set your mind to something, you can achieve it no matter how many roadblocks you encounter. And no matter what has happened in the past, humans can co-exist with other species if they really want to. It also makes one question whether being blissfully unaware is a boon or bane. With catchy songs and fun moments, the film is enjoyable although the length does get a little tedious towards the end. The script is pretty straightforward and will keep kids entertained although it may not find many adult takers.
Summary / Analysis

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
Migo (voice of Channing Tatum) and a group of other yetis live high in the Himalayas above the clouds where they live and follow a series of stones held by the Stonekeeper (voice of Common). Migo's dad Dorgle (voice of Danny Devito) is the gong ringer whose job is to summon the sun to bring in a new day daily.
Hoping to become the village gong ringer like his father, he starts practicing with Dorgle and during one attempt gets distracted by Meechee (voice of Zendaya), Stonekeeper's daughter who Migo has a huge crush on. He flies way off course and reaches the other side of the mountain. Just then a plane crashes near Migo, and a human is ejected from it. Migo is astonised to see that it is a Smallfoot (human), who the yetis consider just as a folk tale. Before Migo can do anything, the man’s parachute takes him down the mountain.
When Migo goes back to the village to tell the other yetis of his discovery, the Stonekeeper accuses him of saying that the stones are wrong. After Migo admits to disagreeing with the stones, so Stonekeeper banishes him from the village. As Migo walks through the snow, he meets fellow yetis Gwangi (voice of LeBron James), Kolka (voice of Gina Rodriguez) and Fleem (voice of Ely Henry) who are a part of the S.E.S. (Smallfoot Evidentiary Society) whose leader turns out to be Meechee. Meechee convinces Migo to go and find the Smallfoot.
Migo begins his journey and he lands in a bed of snow. He sees the forest for the first time and is fascinated by the world outside the mountain. Somewhere close by, Percy Patterson (voice of James Corden), a wildlife documentarian, is trying to get a video on an exotic spider. His nature show has been struggling in ratings. Just then the man from the plane comes running in a panic as he tells Percy that he saw a yeti. Percy talks to his assistant Brenda (voice of Yara Shahidi) about trying to get a video of the yeti to boost his ratings. He wants Brenda to wear a yeti suit so they can fake the video but she refuses.
Migo reaches the bar where Percy is and the two see each other but Percy assumes it’s Brenda in the suit. When he realises that he is a real yeti, Percy freaks out and tries to tranquilise Migo, but gets himself knocked out, and Migo brings Percy with him.
Back in the village, Dorgle prepares to do his duty, but misses the gong, and his helmet breaks in two, but the sun still rises to his surprise. He rings the gong with both broken helmet pieces, and Dorgle is left questioning his job. Migo returns to the mountain and reunites with Meechee, Gwangi, Kolka, and Fleem. They arrive in the village so that Migo may present Percy to the whole village. While the yetis are amazed, the Stonekeeper is not very happy at this discovery. Percy tries to explain human life to Meechee and the others through drawings.
Stonekeeper later tells Migo the truth about their history. He tells Percy that he has always known that humans existed because the yetis used to live below the mountain, but the humans' attempts to eliminate them drove the yetis to live high up. The cloud formation that obscures their view of the land below is a result of the yetis dropping blocks of ice into a machine that makes steam so the yetis won't know of the world below, and the history with the stones was just something Stonekeeper made up to protect the others. He asks Migo to do the same. Stonekeeper brings Migo in front of the other yetis as he holds Percy, who is suffering due to high altitude sickness. Migo is forced to lie and say that he didn't find a Smallfoot, but rather a rare form of yak. Meechee is very upset with Migo. Migo feels bad for betraying his friends and goes to Dorgle, who encourages him to find Meechee. Migo then realises that Meechee has taken Percy back to his home.
Meechee's friends and Migo rush after the two and and see that she is headed into town. She leaves Percy somewhere safe, but is soppted by some humans. The police arrive and try to capture Meechee, but Migo and the others save her and they hide out in a yeti museum, where they find that the humans think they are monsters.
The yetis try to run back up to the mountain but are chased by a helicopter. Stonekeeper shows up and throws all of his stones to save them. Migo comes across Percy, who reluctantly shoots a tranquiliser dart at him. It then appears as though Migo has stumbled toward the police, and that they have shot him, but it's really Percy in the yeti suit to create a distraction. He and Brenda reconcile, but Percy is arrested for destruction of property. Percy then deletes all the pictures and videos he took with the yetis to protect their existence.
Migo and his friends go back up the mountain after they realise Percy saved Migo. With Stonekeeper's help, Migo speaks to the village again, saying that while the humans may seem terrified of them, and vice versa, the yetis should still give them a chance. Stonekeeper helps Migo stop the steam machines so that the yetis can finally see the land below them. The yetis make their way toward the town. The humans gather and seem scared but Percy walks through the police blockade, followed by Brenda, to prove that the yetis are not dangerous. The other humans soon follow, and the yetis start to have friendly interactions. The end credits show little drawings on stone of how the humans and yetis now play with and learn from each other.
