Skyscraper Story: Former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Sawyer, now assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment in China, he’s trapped along with his family in the tallest building in the world as it is suddenly set ablaze. It’s now up to him to survive and rescue them.

Skyscraper Review: Dwayne Johnson is at the point in his career where he can confidently feature in derivative films with the knowledge that they'll coast along merely on his charisma. 'Skyscraper' certainly doesn't try to be new or innovative in any way. It's the same setup we've seen before in 'Towering Inferno' and 'Die Hard' where people are trapped in buildings and need to be rescued against all odds. That's pretty much what we have here as well. Throw in some 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' stunts and that summarises this film in a nutshell.

But fortunately, the makers are aware of this, so they go ahead and embrace it. Writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber has worked with Dwayne Johnson before so he knows precisely how to utilise his acting skills. Johnson's Will Sawyer isn't too complicated - he is a trained soldier who has been relegated to a security job after a failed mission costs him his leg. However, he needs to tap into his military training when his family is put at risk when they get trapped in the world's tallest building in Hong Kong. All Sawyer cares about is saving his wife and kids, while taking on the bad guys. Even the villains are your standard East-European mercenaries whose primary motive is money. They aren't exactly threatening and are far from memorable.

Despite all these negative aspects, the movie falls smack down the middle of 'you get what you paid for' territory. This allows you to push logic out of the building (pun intended) and savour the mayhem as it unfolds. Johnson and Neve Campbell, as Sawyer's wife Sarah, have ample experience to keep their performances rooted enough without being campy. That said, this one might be worth your money and time only if your expectations aren't sky-high and you enjoy predicting what happens next in movies

Summary / Analysis

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
U.S. Marine war veteran and retired FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader Will Sawyer now assesses security for skyscrapers. His left leg is amputated as a result of a suicide explosion from a previous mission. He is currently reviewing "The Pearl", a newly-constructed 225-story skyscraper in Hong Kong for financier Zhao Long Ji. During his assessment, his family - wife, Sarah, and twin children, Georgia and Henry - have resided in the not yet opened residential floors.

Sawyer meets with Zhao, Zhao's security directors Ajani Okeke and Ben Gillespie (who is also Sawyer's friend and fellow ex-FBI agent), and insurance executive Mr. Pierce. Sawyer reports the computerized security systems are all secure but he needs to inspect the offsite security center. Zhao provides him with a tablet locked with facial recognition that gives him complete control over the computerized systems in the Pearl. Sawyer and Gillespie travel to the offsite location, but en route, a thief hired by Kores Botha, an international terrorist, attempts to steal the tablet. In the confrontation, Gillespie reveals he is also working for Botha. Sawyer fatally wounds Gillespie, but Gillespie warns him that Botha will kill Sawyer to get the tablet.

As Sawyer tries to return to the Pearl, the tablet is stolen by Xia, one of Botha's associates. Xia and her agents attack the offsite center, killing all the guards there, and then hack the tablet to bypass its facial security and disable the fire extinguishing systems in the upper half of the Pearl. Simultaneously, Botha and a group of his men break into the Pearl and start a fire on the 96th floor; without extinguishing, the fire creates a barrier from preventing entry or exit from the upper floors. Zhao and Okeke send security guards to rescue Sawyer's family, but they are killed in an explosion, and the family is believed dead. Urged on by Pierce, Zhao orders the remaining personnel to evacuate via helicopter, but Pierce reveals he is also an agent for Botha, killing all but Zhao who escapes into his penthouse apartment, locking it down from any intrusion.

Outside, Inspector Wu leads the local police to secure the Pearl and to capture Sawyer, who is believed to be behind the incidents. Sawyer evades the police and makes his way into the Pearl above the fire barrier via construction equipment from a neighboring building. Sawyer arrives in time to kill Pierce before he can kill his family, though Georgia is separated from the others across a large atrium. Sawyer has Sarah and Henry ride through the fire barrier in a free-fall elevator before applying the emergency brakes, letting them escape safely; Sarah immediately explains the situation to Wu and that Botha's men will likely escape via parachute to a nearby landing zone. Sawyer goes to recover Georgia but Botha has captured her by the time Sawyer crosses. Botha will only let Georgia go if Sawyer brings him Zhao. Sawyer is forced to disable the locks on Zhao's penthouse through an exterior panel on the building, but safely returns to meet Zhao. Zhao shows him that Botha had been coercing and intimidating him throughout the construction of the Pearl with money laundering, but Zhao kept a detailed log of the various transactions, information that would be dire to Botha if it became public and why he believes Botha is attacking the tower. Sawyer brings Zhao to Botha at the top of the skyscraper, preparing to make the trade for Georgia. In the trade, Zhao distracts Botha, allowing Sawyer to kill the rest of Botha's men. Botha grabs Georgia and threatens to drop her over the edge of the building, but Sawyer beats him, rescues Georgia, and lets Botha die in an grenade explosion on a lower level.

Meanwhile, Wu leads an attack on the likely dropzone, securing Xia and killing her other men. Sarah recovers the tablet and uses it to restart the computer systems in the Pearl, allowing the extinguishing systems to reset and put out the blaze. Sawyer, Georgia, and Zhao are brought down safely by helicopter, and Sawyer happily reunites with his family, while Zhao states his intention to rebuild the Pearl.
