Story: A group of survivors are met with numerous obstacles as they go on a mission to find a cure for a deadly virus that is threatening to obliterate the world’s population

Review: The third and last installment in the series, Maze Runner: The Death Cure takes off with the Gladers — Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Frypan (Dexter Darden) and Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) on a dangerous mission to save one of their friends, Minho (Ki Hong Lee) and, of course, the world from a terrifying end. Among the last few to have remained immune to Flare, the deadly virus that has laid siege on a majority of the world’s population, the Gladers are running against time to find a cure. As they attempt to sneak into the Last City, they encounter a series of obstacles that threaten their very existence.

There are several fast-paced action sequences in the film that will keep you engaged but only till a certain point. The interminable length of the film stretched to way over two hours is a dampener. It ensures that your mind keeps meandering and eventually makes it difficult to keep up with the incessant twists and turns in the plot. Shot on a fairly lavish scale, the special effects deserve a mention for their superiority. However, you wish director Wes Ball had gone with a more measured screenplay, which would have made the film enjoyable even for those who haven’t watched the previous two installments. The film also suffers a bit because it tries to juggle too many plot lines without being able to balance them well.

Among the cast, O’Brien stands out as the loyal friend and tormented lover, who wants to make sure his loved ones face no harm. Scodelario tries hard but fails to impress as the doctor, torn between her ethics and inability to maintain relationships with those closest to her. The rest of the cast do a decent job of playing their characters well. If you’re a fan of the franchise, enjoy watching ‘save the world from the apocalypse’ type of action thrillers and have been following the story over the years, this finale might be of interest to you.
Summary / Analysis

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
The third installment opens after the ‘Scorch Trials’ film where the Gladers are going after a WCKD train to rescue Minho (Ki Hong Lee). Although they try their best, the mission remains unsuccessful as Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Vince (Barry Pepper), Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Brenda (Rosa Salazar) fail to release Minho.
Meanwhile, Thomas, Newt and Frypan decide to give the rescue mission another shot and team up to find Minho while the others stay back. Janson (Aiden Gillen) takes Minho to the WCKD headquarters where he is put in a virtual reality simulation, in the same maze he started in. As he runs and finds himself being chased by a Griever, WCKD scientists extract his blood for finding a cure for the Flare virus. Ensuring that everything is going according to plan are Ava (Patricia Clarkson) and Teresa (Kaya Scodelario).
As Thomas, Newt and Frypan encounter Cranks on their way, they are saved by Jorge and Brenda who arrive just in the nick of time. Soon, the group approaches the Last City where they see a crowd of infected protesters gathered by boundary wall. Here, they meet Gally (Will Poulter), who offers them help. He leads them to the home of an infected rebellion leader named Lawrence (Walton Goggins), who offers Thomas, Newt and Gally a way to sneak into the city.
Inside the city, Teresa is busy testing out Minho’s blood on a young infected girl but the experiment fails. Thomas and Gally capture Teresa and convince her to help them get inside the facility to rescue Minho. After finding Minho, they escape from Janson who tries to kill them.
Soon, Lawrence and his army of infected people storm inside the city, which is under siege in no time. Newt, who has been infected, turns into a Crank and gives Thomas a necklace with a cylinder. The two start fighting and after a while Newt in a Crank-like state, begs Thomas to kill him, which he has to do against his will. Thomas then fights Janson and saves Teresa. As the two run to the top of the burning building, Jorge rides a jet with Brenda, Vince and Gally inside. While Teresa helps Thomas jump to safety, she gets killed herself when the building collapses. The remaining survivors go to a remote island and make it their new home.
