Last Night In Soho

STORY: Last Night in Soho is about a budding fashion designer Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) who, through a series of dreams, is transported to the era of sixties London and meets her doppelganger Sandie, an upcoming singer. Eloise also meets Jack, a suave hotel manager and it soon turns out that Jack is not what he seems and thereafter begins a dismal nightmare for Eloise when the demarcation between reality and fiction slowly begins to blur. Behind the glamour of the era lurks behind something sinister.

REVIEW: An apt credit slate for director Edgar Wright for Last Night in Soho should have been ‘from the minds of’ instead of ‘directed by’. Edgar Wright’s repertoire includes films like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Baby Driver and Last Night in Soho too gives a peek into his mind that he thinks differently. Wright is a keen learner of cinema and this is evident in his latest offering too.

So brilliantly has London of the 60s been created in the film that one actually wishes more of the sequences. A better term to describe the sequences would be hypnotic. Soho in the 60s was a misogynistic haunt and this is how Wright has shown in his film. If one is familiar with the British cinema of the 60s and 70s and the topography of London of course, Last Night in Soho would be a joy ride. The film begins on a sunny note but later shifts gear and turns into a gore fest peppered with strong sexual content which some might find abhorring.

Thomasin McKenzie as Eloise is an upcoming talent and after Jojo Rabbit and Old has once again proven that she is a talent that needs to be nurtured. This is Anya’s next appearance after the mega-success of The Queen’s Gambit and she immerses in the character just as fish takes to water. Matt Smith’s character does give vile and creepy feels. The presence of Terence Stamp surely lights up the screen.

Full marks to Wright for pouring his heart into the film but it seems so obsessed he got with his own material that he overlooked the fault lines. The film begins on a great note but towards the climax turns into boredom. The film has loopholes and the foremost being that Eloise’s story has no conclusion. The sequence that features the film’s lone Black character dressed for Halloween is just bizarre. When judged against Wright’s earlier films, Last Night in Soho turns out pretty meek. Quentin Tarantino has now competition and there is every possibility that Edgar Wright might just usurp his place. The film has a killer soundtrack that keeps you invested. It’s primarily the fashion, art direction, the soundtrack and the performances that keep you going and the same cannot be said about the screenplay. What the film does, in the end, is that it leaves you meditative.
