Story: Lonnie Frisbee, Greg Laurie, and Pastor Chuck Smith played key roles in the Jesus Movement in California during the late 1960s. The trio unexpectedly revived a struggling church, bringing new life to it in a remarkable manner.

Review: The Jesus movement, originating in California in the late 1960s, swiftly swept across most states, earning its place as the most significant spiritual awakening in American history. Unfortunately, this film, based on a book co-authored by Ellen Santilli Vaughn and Greg Laurie, a key figure in the movement, falls short of delving into the depth of the phenomenon. Rather than grappling with the tough questions surrounding the movement, the film opts for a preachy narrative. It ultimately relegates itself to a superficial portrayal, missing the chance to craft a gripping tale from what was once Time Magazine's cover story.

Set against the backdrop of 1968, the film unfolds as Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer), a California minister overseeing Calvary Chapel, becomes acutely aware of the disconnect between the church and the younger generation. The narrative takes a turn when he encounters Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie), a charismatic hippie espousing the teachings of Jesus. Recognizing the potential for a transformative movement to reach out to the hippie counterculture, they join forces. Woven into this tapestry is the journey of Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney), a high school student, who undergoes a transformation after being influenced by Lonnie's preaching, ultimately becoming an integral part of the movement.

“Jesus Revolution” falters when juxtaposed with the reality of the historical movement it seeks to portray. In navigating the complex dynamics between Chuck Smith and Lonnie Frisbee, the film veers away from the authentic source of conflict. Those acquainted with the actual events recognize that Frisbee's expulsion wasn't rooted in disputes over his approach to faith healing but rather his sexual orientation. The film treads cautiously on this significant aspect, opting for a safer narrative.

Kelsey Grammer delivers a commendable performance in the portrayal of Pastor Chuck Smith, injecting a palpable warmth and a dash of humour into his character. Jonathan Roumie, embodying Lonnie Frisbee, brings a refreshing presence, despite appearing slightly older than expected. The film ambitiously intertwines the countercultural forces of the hippie and Jesus movements, both instrumental in sparking cultural revolutions. However, the narrative falls short of delving into the substantive core of these two influential movements, rendering the film, at best, a superficial and fluffy exploration.
