Iron Lung

Story: A prisoner is sent on a dangerous mission aboard a crude submarine to explore an alien ocean, relying on limited instruments and fragile equipment as unseen dangers lurk beyond the vessel’s steel walls.

Review: Iron Lung is built around a simple yet unnerving premise: a lone operator navigating a hostile environment from inside an outdated submarine. Director Mark Fischbach (aka Markiplier) wisely embraces the constraints of that setup rather than trying to expand beyond them, turning the vessel’s cramped interior into the film’s central engine of tension. The story rarely strays from this suffocating environment, and that deliberate confinement becomes one of the film’s greatest strengths.

Most of the action unfolds inside the submarine’s claustrophobic cockpit. Instead of relying on visible monsters or elaborate set pieces, the film leans into the fear of the unknown. Strange noises reverberate through the metal hull, sonar readings behave unpredictably, and the outside world remains largely unseen. This approach transforms imagination into the film’s most effective tool, forcing viewers to fill the darkness with their own worst fears.

Fischbach’s performance carries much of the emotional weight. As the lone occupant of the submarine, he conveys a compelling mix of determination, anxiety, and creeping dread as the mission grows increasingly uncertain. His reactions anchor the narrative and keep the audience invested even when the story slows down. Without an ensemble cast or varied locations, the film relies almost entirely on his presence to sustain tension.

The pacing, however, is where Iron Lung occasionally falters. The slow, methodical rhythm helps build atmosphere, but the minimal plot can lead to stretches that feel repetitive. Viewers unfamiliar with the game may find themselves wishing for more context about the wider world or clearer stakes surrounding the mission.

Visually, the film embraces darkness and limitation. Narrow corridors, dim lighting, and blinking instrument panels create a suffocating atmosphere that rarely lets the viewer relax. The sound design plays an equally crucial role in heightening the sense that something massive and unknowable exists just beyond the submarine’s fragile shell.

While Iron Lung doesn’t completely overcome the narrative restrictions of its minimalist concept, it remains an impressive exercise in mood-driven horror. It’s less concerned with shocking the audience than with immersing them in a slow, creeping dread. For fans of atmospheric sci-fi horror, the film proves that sometimes the most frightening thing is what you never quite see.
