Five Feet Apart Story: Two young patients with cystic fibrosis fall in love with each other despite being forced to stay apart due to their illness.

Five Feet Apart Review: Both Stella Grant (Haley Lu Richardson) and Will Newman (Cole Sprouse) suffer from the genetic disorder and life-threatening incurable illness cystic fibrosis (CF), which affects their lungs. Stella tries to battle her illness using social media to educate people on how it affects patients. She’s also extremely mindful about her medical regimen, by keeping track and organizing her pills using an app that she made. On the other hand, Will throws caution to the wind as he believes they are living on borrowed time, and prefers to make the most of their short lives. CF patients need to be kept 6 feet apart as they suffer the risk of contracting infections. This becomes a big hindrance when Stella and Will fall in love with each other.

If the very notion of this plot makes you go weak in your knees, then this film is definitely for you. Falling firmly within the ‘tragic romance’ genre, ‘Five Feet Apart’ follows the typical clichés one would expect from this by-the-numbers setup. Chances are that tears will also be shed along the way. But it has a few surprises as well. For one, Haley Lu Richardson displays an impressive range and depth in her performance. This allows us to become engrossed with Stella Grant’s coping mechanisms while celebrating her small victories. Stella’s arc anchors the narrative down, especially when the screenplay feels stretched out. As soon as Stella meets Will, you know they’re going to fall for each other, but the plot takes its time to get there. Cole Sprouse as Will is also charming and effective. But it doesn’t help that he’s tasked with clunky dialogue particularly in a pivotal scene during the climax that makes him comes across quite cheesy.

The film seems to be a genuine attempt to illustrate how CF patients deal with relationships along with their multiple restrictions. Stella’s friendship with Poe (Moises Arias) is often far more intriguing as it is devoid of romantic chemistry. Nurse Barb (Kimberly Hebert Gregory) and her concern for these patients also demonstrate some of the challenges faced by caretakers, and the effect it has on them. Despite a run-time that director Justin Baldoni could have easily trimmed down to a crisper version, ‘Five Feet Apart’ manages to be engaging due to its performances, and is more than likely to pull on heartstrings in some unexpected places.

Summary / Analysis

Spoiler alert! Please do not read the following plot summary if you have not seen the film.
Stella Grant is a cystic fibrosis (CF'er) patient who actively uses social media to cope with her illness and tries to live a normal life. She meets another CF patient, Will Newman, who is at the hospital for a medication trial, in an attempt to get rid of the bacterial infection (B. cepacia) he has in his lungs.

CF patients are strictly kept six feet apart to reduce the risk of cross-infection, as contracting bacterial infections from other CF patients can be life-threatening. Stella is determined to adhere to the rule, and initially dislikes Will, who likes to break the rules and take risks. Stella notices that Will isn't strictly adhering to his treatment and asks him to start following his regimen. He agrees to, under the condition that he gets to draw her. He shares his art, always as cartoons.

As the pair grow closer, with Will learning that Stella’s older sister died in a freak accident, Stella decides to not let being a CF patient take over her life anymore and "takes one foot back", keeping five feet away from Will at all times by them each holding one end of a pool cue. Will and Stella begin to fall for each other and secretly go on their first date, eventually ending up at the hospital pool, where they strip to reveal scars from their past surgeries. The next day, Stella creates a scavenger hunt for Will's birthday, which catches him by surprise. It culminates with Will meeting up with Stella, who leads him to a room filled with all of their friends for a surprise dinner party, courtesy of Stella and Poe, Stella's best friend and a fellow CF patient.

Sometime thereafter, Poe dies and Stella laments that she never got to hug him. Heartbroken, Stella decides that she is living her life too strictly. She convinces Will to leave the hospital with her in order to view the lights from the city. As they walk, Stella suddenly grabs Will's hand, which she justifies because she has gloves on. They come across a pond and slide around on the frozen surface. Meanwhile, the hospital is notified that a lung transplant is available for Stella, who ignores alerts about it in order to spend more time out with Will.

When Will discovers this, he pleads with Stella to take the transplant. Stella refuses, before falling through the ice. Will is able to pull her out of the water, but Stella is unresponsive. Despite the risk of infection, Will performs CPR and Stella wakes up. They are then brought back to the hospital by ambulance. Though hesitant at first, Stella agrees to do the transplant after Will convinces her to do it for him. The transplant is successful, and Will learns that Stella did not contract his infection.

When Stella wakes up from her surgery, she sees Will through the glass of her room. He has setup a display of lights outside of her room, saying that his only regret was that she did not get to see the lights so he brought them to her. He tells her that his drug trial isn't working, and he doesn't want her to have to deal with his eventual death. Confessing his love for her, Will makes her close her eyes, because he says he won't be able to leave if she is looking at him. Stella closes her eyes and Will walks away. After he leaves Stella's parents reveal he left her his sketchbook, and it is revealed he broke his cartoon-only rule whenever he was sketching her.
