Zack Snyder claims 'Rebel Moon' would have beaten 'Barbie' at box office with $1.6 billion collection; netizens say director is discovering 'girl math'

Filmmaker Zack Snyder has sparked a meme-fest with his recent remarks, alleging that his movie 'Rebel Moon: Part 1' would have outperformed the box office success of Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie'.

The 'Justice League' director suggested that 'Rebel Moon', which had an OTT release, garnering 90 million views, would have been the highest-grossing film of 2023, if it released in cinemas. According to Snyder's calculations, if two people watched his movie for each of the 90 million accounts, he projected that a traditional theatrical release model could have potentially reached an audience of 160 million people. This, he assessed, would result in a box office collection of $1.6 billion, with ticket prices estimated at $10.

However, Snyder's mathematical interpretation has been met with scepticism from netizens, who have dubbed it as the viral trend called "girl math". Taking to their handles, netizens poked fun at the director saying, "Zack Snyder discovering girl math in real time."



Another quipped, "People will say Zack Snyder is being sexist, but he’s actually practising the ancient and noble tradition of girl math."

"Zack Snyder comparing Barbie's box office to Rebel Moon's view count is a perfect example of the math not mathing," said another.

Netizens, seemed to agree that the director, equating views on an OTT platform to box office ticket sales was 'flawed', pointing out that streaming platforms operate on a subscription-based model rather than individual ticket purchases.



'Barbie' earned a total of $1.44 billion at the global box office. The film is up for 6 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
