Director Yuichiro Sakashita has been on the rise to fame after the release of his satirical film ‘Blonde’, which is said to be inspired by a real-life student revolt. The filmmaker recently opened up about the film and what went down behind bringing the new-age story to life for the big screen.
Yuichiro Sakashita satirical take on old-time rules in schools and how he came up with ‘Blonde’
The film recently had its official premiere at the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker broke down the aspects of ‘Blonde’ and how it was inspired by real events that went down in Japan. He shared that there had been a lot of cases about schools in the country still following old-time and trivial rules very strictly. One such case stood out to him after a student sued the school and the education board directly for forcing her to dye her hair black. She had naturally light hair, which went against the trivial rule about how all students need to have black hair.
He further shared that he also wished to tackle Japan’s obsession with turning 30. He added, “Culturally, people here are obsessed with youth, so even as adults, we secretly wish we were still young. That sense of insecurity and nostalgia became central to how I portrayed him.”
He initially made the students the main protagonists of the film; however, the first draft of his script was not well-received.
This prompted him to approach it from the perspective of the teacher who is not in terms of his adulthood. Beyond that, he also shared that the story turned into an “adult coming of age” tale about the teacher who has to establish the rules no matter what. “So, ironically, the students are quite mature, and it’s the teacher who must come of age.”
Director opens up about why he chose blonde hair
The filmmaker also shared why he specifically chose blonde hair, as compared to the wide array of hair colours available in the market. He stated that he felt the color was the most striking to look at on the screen, and that it “draws the most extreme reaction possible within that framework.”
