Writer-director
Craig Mazin, known for critically-acclaimed shows such as "Chernobyl" and "The Last of Us", says comedy is the hardest thing to do and critics often don't give due credit to the genre.
Mazin's new comedy "The Sheep Detective" is about talking farm animals who decide to investigate the dead of their shepherd, played by Hugh Jackman.
Asked about the critics' response to comedy, Mazin told the Hollywood Reporter, "Well, to start with, critics don’t give comedy its due. And it is the hardest thing to do."
"Best picture at the Academy Awards should only be comedies as far as I’m concerned. It’s just understood that best picture of the year goes to something very serious. That’s that. It’s so much harder to write Scary Movie 3 than it is to write 'Chernobyl'. And I know this from personal experience. I also think people get into film criticism because of their love of comedy," the writer-director said.
"The Sheep Detectives" is Mazin's adaptation of Leonie Swann’s "Three Bags Full". It has been a passion project for him for two decades, has been a passion project of his for the better part of two decades.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brett Goldstein and Regina Hall have voice acted in the movie that also stars Emma Thompson and Hong Chau. It is in theatres now.
"Chernobyl' is Mazin's celebrated 2019 series on the 1986 nuclear disaster in Chernobyl while "The Last of Us" is a video game adaptation. Mazin was a screenwriter on "Scary Movie 3".
