How was the on-and-off relationship?

Odell described that Gwyneth’s friends had described Ben as an ‘intellectual match,’ but he had his demons. She recalled that the 52-year-old actor was struggling with alcoholism and gambling when he met the 52-year-old actress. Her eagle-eyed friends had a warning sign for him, as he did not always reciprocate her affection. “He at times seemed more interested in playing video games with the guys at his house than being with Gwyneth,” the author wrote. Furthermore, detailing the situation, Amy mentioned that Gwyneth’s friends felt that he did not appreciate the ‘Seven’ actress enough.
“She would be making dinner, and he would want to go out with the guys. A friend said that Gwyneth would compare him to [the guys in] Entourage,” the book reads.

The relationship did not last for long

Simultaneously, the author highlighted that both of them shared an intense, intimate chemistry, where the actress even dropped some bread crumbs to her hairstylist friend. However, Odell wrote, “Their physical chemistry couldn't overcome his self-destructive impulses,” revealing that they broke their relationship off soon after her opening of the film, ‘Shakespeare in Love.’
