When Laura Harrier thought Zendaya had landed her role in 'Spider-Man' series: 'I called my agent...'

We all know that the entertainment industry often breeds moments of uncertainty, even for rising stars. Laura Harrier, who portrayed Liz Toomes in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming,' once shared her initial fear that Zendaya had snagged the role she auditioned for. In a candid interview, Harrier reflected on the casting process, her eventual friendship with Zendaya, and Marvel Studios’ progressive approach to representation.

Harrier recalled feeling doubtful after her screen test for the Marvel blockbuster. "I had done my test, but a few weeks later, the news broke that Zendaya had been cast," she told Net-a-Porter. "At that point, I assumed I didn’t get the job and that Zendaya did. I called my agent, and they assured me I was still in contention."

Zendaya, a prominent Disney star at the time, was widely speculated to play Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s traditional love interest. However, Zendaya’s reimagined MJ and Harrier’s Liz Toomes brought fresh perspectives to the franchise. Harrier praised Marvel’s decision to cast two women of color in significant roles. "It was refreshing and felt authentic. Marvel didn’t make our characters’ stories about race—we were just two girls attending a diverse school in New York, which is true to life."

Despite the initial competition, Harrier and Zendaya formed a close bond. "We had so much fun filming, especially swinging around on the wires," Harrier reminisced. She also expressed gratitude for the friendships she’s built in the industry, including Zendaya, Yara Shahidi, and Alycia Debnam-Carey.

Seven years later, both actresses have flourished. Harrier continues to take on prominent roles, while Zendaya has become a global icon with acclaimed performances in Dune and Euphoria. Their time on Spider-Man not only marked a milestone for representation but also highlighted the value of camaraderie in Hollywood’s competitive landscape.
