On how the project came his way, TomHanks said he found the director’s method of roping him in“interesting.” “We were shown a complete story reel of theentire movie, with storyboards moving from one to the next. With some recordedvoices, music and sound effects, it was enough for me to sign up for theproject,” he said.
Directed by Lee Unkrich, the movie willshow the toys’ adventure as a now grown-up Andy leaves for college andthey are dropped off at a day-care centre. The toys find themselves in a roomfull of tiny tots who can’t wait to get their sticky little fingers onthese the toys. “A film like this accomplishes what timeless classics aimat — innocent characters who face an endless trail of adventure,”says Hanks. Escaping from the kids, it’s pandemonium as the toys try tostay together, ensuring that no toy gets left behind. “We’retalking about toy dinosaurs and Mr Potato Head, and yet you feel for them anddon’t want them to get recycled or stuck with the bratty kids. You wantthem to be together and played with at the end of the movie. The filmmakersalways manage to get you right in the heart,” says the actor. Meanwhile,Barbie comes face to face with the oh-so-sexy Ken and much transpires.
The romance aside, Hanks says anyone would love the pull-stringcowboy Sheriff Woody for his mere passion. “He’s a guy who throwshimself into every action. As soon as he has an instinctive thought like‘I have to help them,’ or ‘I have to run away,’ he doesit with 100-percent commitment. You gotta love that aboutanybody.”
And, he’s an emotional guy who goes throughseveral heart-wrenching moments. “In one scene, Woody must watch hisbuddies get inadvertently thrown in the garbage. Another challenge he faces iswhen he chooses to walk away from his toy friends because of a temporarydifference of perceptions. It’s a big, tough decision for him. Withoutgiving too much away, there is this tremendous life-shattering and life-savingadventure,” reveals Hanks.
Hanks says he would rather play thesheriff, but he has a liking for Slinky dog too. “I think Slinky can goplaces and do things that other toys can’t because of his ability tostretch. That would be fun,” he laughs.
