Tom Cruise received his first Oscar nomination in 23 years for Top Gun: Maverick despite missing out on the Best Actor category
The international celebrity received widespread acclaim for his performance in the action sequel even if not for best actor. A lesser known fact is that Tom Cruise is one of the producers for Top Gun: Maverick.
The epic sequel was included in the Academy's list of 10 Best Picture candidates on Tuesday morning, earning the 60-year-old his fourth career Oscar nod for his role as a producer on the blockbuster sequel, which has earned close to $1.5 billion in box office revenue thus far.

He was previously nominated for his work as an actor for 1989's Born on the Fourth of July, 1996's Jerry Maguire, and 1999's Magnolia. This marks only the fourth time that Cruise has been nominated despite having one of the lengthiest and most successful careers in Hollywood, starting out with Endless Love in 1981 and progressing further up the ranks of the Hollywood ladder. That’s 42 years and counting as an actor!
The film also earned 2023 Oscar nominations for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Original Song (Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand"), Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.
