Isiah Whitlock Jr., the actor who featured in Spike Lee films and shows like 'The Wire' and 'Veep', has passed away. He was 71. According to his manager, Brian Liebman, the actor took his last breath in New York after a short illness.
According to The Associated Press, the manager sent the information of his passing away through an email. Whitlock made frequent appearances in the above-mentioned shows and the movies directed by Spike Lee. He played the character of the corrupt state Sen. Clay Davis in 25 episodes across the five seasons of 'The Wire'. He was popularly known for his catchphrase—"Sheee-it."
Whitlock featured in five films of the filmmaker, which included 'The 25th Hour', 'She Hate Me', 'Red Hook Summer', 'Chi-Raq', 'BlacKkKlansman' and 'Da 5 Bloods'.
As per the report, Lee shared that they made memories during the time they shot for 'Da 5 Bloods' in Thailand. The filmmaker recalled meeting for the last time at the 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' screening earlier this year.
Lee expressed, "He was just a beautiful, beautiful soul. If you were around him, he made everybody feel good in his presence. He would radiate. I would put that over his acting." The filmmaker concluded, saying, "He was hilarious. That was just his nature; he made people laugh. Everybody was in on the joke."
The news of Whitlock's passing has come after the recent demise of another 'The Wire' star, James Ransone.
He started his career with featuring in small TV guest roles on shows like 'Cagney and Lacy'. He also starred in small roles in 'Goodfellas' and 'Gremlins 2: The New Batch'.
After 'The Wire', he featured in another series, 'Veep', from the same studio. In this show, he played the role of Secretary of Defense George Maddox for three seasons. The producer of 'The Wire', David Simon, also paid a tribute to the late actor with a post on Bluesky. He wrote, "As fine an actor as he was, Isiah was an even better spirit and the greatest gentleman."
