'The Boy and the Heron' clinches New York film critics award for best animated film
Hayao Miyazaki's latest creation, "The Boy and the Heron," emerged triumphant at the 89th annual New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) Awards, clinching the coveted title of Best Animated Film. This cinematic masterpiece vied against stellar contenders such as Makoto Shinkai’s "Suzume," alongside formidable animations like "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," "Robot Dreams," and "Elemental."
Scheduled for a grand North American release on December 8, 2023, this enchanting film promises an immersive experience. GKIDS secured the rights to distribute the movie, offering audiences the choice between an English-dubbed version or the original Japanese audio with English subtitles.
"The Boy and the Heron" embarked on an international journey, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as its opening film on September 7, marking a monumental moment as the festival's first animated opener and Japan's inaugural representation. This marked the commencement of a global tour, captivating audiences at esteemed events like the San Sebastian Film Festival (SSIFF), where Miyazaki received the distinguished Donostia Award for his illustrious career.
Eagerly anticipated, the film made a significant splash in its home turf, Japan, upon its release on July 14, 2023. Within just three days, it sold a staggering 1.003 million tickets and amassed a whopping US$13.2 million. Further solidifying its success, it raked in 2.149 billion yen (approximately US$15.53 million) over the extended weekend, securing its position as the 74th highest-grossing film in Japan's history, with a cumulative total of 8,333,397,800 yen (about US$55.60 million).
This landmark production stands as Studio Ghibli's pioneering foray into the realm of IMAX screenings, elevating the visual and auditory experience for audiences. With Dolby Atmos, Dolby Cinema, and DTS:X formats, viewers are set for an immersive cinematic spectacle like never before.
The film showcases not only his directorial prowess but also his narrative brilliance. Drawing inspiration from the 1937 novel of the same name by Yoshino Genzaburo, "The Boy and the Heron" weaves a poignant tale set against the backdrop of World War II. Protagonist Mahito Maki's emotional journey, guided by a mystical grey heron, unfolds as he navigates a new world and grapples with profound loss and familial complexities.
The film's musical landscape, crafted by maestro Joe Hisaishi, features a captivating score, including the soul-stirring theme song "Chikyūgi" performed by Kenshi Yonezu.
Miyazaki's labour of love, which he described as a tribute to his grandson, has been a laborious yet passionate endeavour reminiscent of the creative process behind "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya." Although marked by a relaxed production timeline, owing to unforeseen circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic, the film spans 125 minutes of sheer cinematic brilliance.
As "The Boy and the Heron" readies itself for a North American debut, audiences worldwide anticipate an unforgettable cinematic odyssey that transcends boundaries and speaks to the essence of human emotion and resilience.
