Disney’s thanksgiving offering this year, Strange World released in theaters on November 23 and streamed on Disney Plus Hotstar just two days later on November 25. But it did not turn out to be one of those magical titles that Disney is always so famous for. While the critics gave it a distinct thumbs down, the audience was divided about their reactions with some of the more discerning among them lamenting and saying that Disney, it seems, wanted the film to fail.
Red_micah44 did not mince words and said that Disney sent this film to its doom while gustavoharos_ commented: “Another failed trash movie.”
But some among the reviewers loved it, posting heart emojis and going out of their way to call it cute.
Little_bee_fantasy wrote on Instagram, “Saw the movie at the theatre today! Only till the middle of the story, then realized it's about Mother Earth, Gaia. Love this movie; It's meaningful.” The user added a heart emoji to her review.
The official release from Walt Disney Animation Studios described Strange World as a feature film that 'introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures.'
Director Don Hall says the story was inspired by classic adventure stories. He said, "Strange World is an original animated adventure/comedy about three generations of the Clade family who overcome their differences while exploring a strange, wondrous and oftentimes hostile world.’
Some among the audience felt that the movie’s message was unfortunately politicised and therefore lost on children. A reviewer on rottentomatoes said his daughter was bored while watching the movie, while another who goes by the name, AdrenalinDragon said, “I was underwhelmed by the entire execution.”
“Curiously disjointed” is how another viewer terms Strange World. However, its one redeeming feature seems to be its animation and the last 15 minutes that lead up to the ending. As another movie buff points out, “Disney did almost no marketing for this film. Did they know that it was bad?”
Another says it is “Bland and boring…” He points out that this is the “downfall of Disney animation. Before they were a masterpiece and now they are this crap.”
