Isuna Hasekura initially launched the Spice and Wolf novel series in 2006, featuring illustrations by Jū Ayakura. After a brief hiatus following the 17th volume in 2011, the series made a triumphant return with the 18th volume in 2016. The latest installment, the 24th volume, was released in January 2023. Yen Press has been instrumental in bringing the series to English-speaking audiences, publishing the 24th novel in North America in August, along with the manga adaptation. Additionally, Hasekura introduced a spinoff series titled Wolf & Parchment: New Theory Spice & Wolf in April 2016, with Yen Press also handling its English releases.
The rich source material has previously inspired two TV anime seasons directed by Takeo Takahashi and scripted by Naruhisa Arakawa. The first season aired in Japan from January to March 2008, followed by the second season, Spice and Wolf II, from July to September 2009. Both seasons were warmly received, with Funimation releasing them on home video.
Building on the success of the television anime, a virtual reality adaptation premiered in June 2019 for Oculus Rift, HTC VIVE, and Oculus Go Edition. The virtual reality experience was so well-received that a sequel debuted in December 2020, further expanding the immersive world of Spice & Wolf.
