Sneak Peek at Minecraft movie: Behind-the-scenes footage first showcased to fans

Mojang Studios has confirmed that its upcoming Minecraft film adaptation will stay true to the game and its creative community, giving fans even more reason to anticipate the film's release.

The studio organized a livestream session for the film's creators, followed by a sneak peek that featured behind-the-scenes footage and the first look at the film. According to director Jared Hess, the live-action approach was intended to honour the creativity of Minecraft modders and content creators.
“There are so many fans who have already created incredible animated stories and shorts using Minecraft. We wanted to take a different route,” Hess explained during the sneak peek. The movie will take an approach similar to films like Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, blending live-action with animation.

In the new promo, viewers see Steve, played by Jack Black, tutoring Henry, portrayed by Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Garrett, played by Jason Momoa, on how to craft items and survive in the Minecraft world. Hess emphasized that they’ve managed to translate elements from the game into a live-action setting in a way that really works.

Olafsson noted that although some aspects of the game had to be adapted for live-action—such as the iconic block sizes—they remained true to the game's overall feel. He highlighted the challenge of balancing what fans love about Minecraft with the practicalities of live-action filmmaking, ensuring that the game’s spirit was preserved while working with human-sized characters.
In the film, Henry is portrayed as a typical modder in the Minecraft universe, customizing and tweaking the game to his own liking. He befriends Steve, the “original” or “vanilla” version of the game, and together, they explore the world of Minecraft.

The Minecraft Movie is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025.
