Directed by Louis Leterrier, Clash of the Titans stars Avatar action star Sam Worthington as Perseus, the half-mortal son of Zeus (Liam Neeson) who battles mythical monstrosities. A remake of the 1981 fantasy adventure, Clash of the Titans, the film also stars Ralph Fiennes and Bond girl
Gemma Arterton. Presented by Warner Bros Pictures the film will release on April 2.
Tell us something about the scale of Clash of the Titans and what drew you to the project? It’s the biggest movie in terms of scope that I have done, also the biggest done by a French director. I grew up watching family entertainment movies by Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante and Robert Zemeckis. I always wanted to be able to do that kind of film, so it was pretty much like a dream come true for me doing this film.
How did you go about bringing in such a diverse cast?I wanted an international cast, because it is a Greek mythology and I didn’t want to use recognisable American actors seen millions of times before. For the Gods, yes, but for the characters, I wanted to use newer faces.
How about casting Sam Worthington?I did not know him at all. I had not seen Avatar or Terminator Salvation at the time. But I instantly adored him at the casting. He brings such humanity and also such a real physicality to the character. He did all his own stunts and he is really very dynamic.
What did you look for in deciding on the locations for the film?It was mandatory for me to go all over the world to find places that had not been seen before 30,000 times. So, we had a crew of 800-500 for the first unit and 300 for the second unit travel to these lesser-known places.
Was it important for you to push the envelope in terms of visual effects in Clash of The Titans? In the original Clash of the Titans, the special effects were done by Ray Harryhausen, a master of the genre. I grew up watching his work. I wanted to bring something different. I wanted to use 3D because you can do something huge and very interactive with the actors. I also wanted to pay homage to Ray.
