Milla Jovovich talks about the behind the scenes drama, after “Resident Evil: Afterlife” debuted at number one on US film chartsIs it easy for you to play a role you’ve played before, or is it more difficult? I think it’s a bit of both because there is a comfort level that I have with this part that has stayed with me, but at the same time, I’m constantly trying to find new qualities in her personality to try and give the audience something that they haven’t seen before.
It’s like a long-time friendship in that every year you know them, you are discovering different things about them, good and bad. I feel that way about Alice. It’s like this friendship that I’ve had with her for almost a decade now.
Hollywood has tried a few times to make action or super heroes movies with female leads, but with no success. “Resident Evil” seems to be the exception. What sets it apart? When I see those zombies in the film I need to believe that they’re really coming after me. I like to get into these fantasy worlds and imagine what it would be like and I also put myself in the position as a regular theatre-goer who is buying a ticket to see the film for genuine entertainment.
Is the dynamic easier because your husband is the one behind the camera? It depends. I’m lucky with Paul because it’s not like he’s asking me to play this super emotional dramatic role like the one I play in this indie film I did called “Stone”. I might have divorced him after “Stone”, as it was a very difficult role, very emotional and draining. It’s hard to leave it at work. I do not remember how many nights I spent crying and emotionally drained after coming home because I couldn’t get the character out of my head. But with Paul, we just have a great time because he’s a fun guy who just loves monsters and explosions and special effects. It’s like a really gruelling hardcore Disneyland.
Do you think we can find some analogies in “Resident Evil” and with the world we live in today? There is a bit of truth in everything. At some point, with the way our population is growing, there is no way the earth can support us and I think this is one message we can find in the film. “Resident Evil”, I think definitely addresses the apocalyptic aspect. It feeds into these innate fears that are stored in the back of our minds.
What about the stunts? Paul said you do most of them...The insurance company seems to be pretty cool with us now since we have been doing most of the stunts ourselves, but I do have an amazing stunt woman on the film as well. I think since we are already in the fourth installment of the franchise they are used to it by now.
