'Princess Diaries 3' is ‘coming’: Garry Marshall’s daughter Kathleen Marshall shares update

Fans of 'The Princess Diaries' have been waiting for news on a third instalment for years, and now Kathleen Marshall, daughter of the late director Garry Marshall, has offered the most encouraging update yet. The project is actively progressing, and the team behind it has nothing but confidence in what is coming.

Speaking exclusively to People at the opening night of 'Beaches on Broadway' on Wednesday, April 22, Kathleen confirmed that 'Princess Diaries 3' is moving forward. "We're working on Princess Diaries 3," she said, adding that she is "excited to be a part of anything" upcoming related to the franchise. "We're moving it along. I mean, there's just an incredible team in place. So it's coming. It's coming."

Kathleen told the outlet that she and 'Princess Diaries' producer Debra Martin Chase exchange emails "every once in a while", and noted that they hope the film is "the next thing" for Anne Hathaway. She walked the red carpet outside the Majestic Theater alongside her mother Barbara Marshall to celebrate the new stage musical adaptation of Garry's hit 1988 film 'Beaches'.

Garry Marshall, who passed away in July 2016 at the age of 81, directed both 'The Princess Diaries' in 2001 and its 2004 sequel 'The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement', both starring Hathaway and Julie Andrews.

Both Kathleen and Barbara had warm words for Hathaway. "We've known her all these years," Barbara said. "She's wonderful. We can talk to her. She has started with us, with Garry, and we're thrilled where she is right now. We can't wait to see the new movie." Development on a third 'Princess Diaries' film has continued steadily in recent years. In 2019, Hathaway confirmed a script had been completed and that both she and Andrews, 90, were ready to film. In 2022, reports emerged that the film was in development, and filmmaker Adele Lim was hired to direct in October 2024.

While promoting 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' this month, Hathaway told Entertainment Weekly that the project remains firmly on track. "100%, we're constantly working on it," she said, adding that 'Devil Wears Prada 2' came together "unexpectedly" and it would have been difficult to make both films simultaneously. "If I learned anything from it, it's that expectations are very, very high, and if you're going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park," she said.
