Princess Diana documentary finds takers
Here’s the story of how the world was deceived.” A documentary helmed by Keith Allen is getting more controversial by the minute.
It supposedly “reveals” the real hand behind the deaths of tycoon Dodi al-Fayed, Princess Diana and their driver Henri Paul. “A cover-up by the British Establishment culminating in a six-month inquest” blares a blurb on the flick’s official website.
1x1 polls
In fact, Allen himself calls it an “inquest of an inquest”.
The film premiered at Cannes recently and will likely see a US release soon, with distributors lining up for rights to the film. The rest of the world follows soon after. Were the British people “misled” about the circumstances surrounding the death of the People’s Princess? Was it a killing rather than an accident? Unlawful Killing is being financed by Dodi’s father Mohamed and that in itself raises questions about the film’s intentions. Allen’s right to have his film seen and his point made, is being denied in the UK. Lawyers in England demanded at least 75 cuts to the film, Allen wrote in a leading daily, a while before the Cannes screening. “Rather than butcher the film or risk legal action”, he decided on screening it elsewhere.
The film has found interested buyers across the world and deals are being worked out and it won’t be long before the film hits Indian shores. The question really is when and who will get the film here. “It is too early to talk of this now”, says an industry insider, adding tersely, “In any case, you never know who will get up to ban the film.”
True that!
