'Planet of the Apes' franchise anticipates the future with the latest movie 'Kingdom'

The action-adventure 'Kingdom' marks the tenth installment in the 'Planet of the Apes' frenchise, continuing the storyline from the reboot trilogy. This trilogy began with 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' in 2011, followed by 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' in 2014, and concluded with 'War for the Planet of the Apes' in 2017.

On Thursday at the London premiere of the new film, Ball, recognized for his work on the 'Maze Runner' series, expressed the challenge of stepping into such significant roles.

He said, "We had to really decide if we had something good here. And I think we do. We have a reason to exist, we're not just a part four, we're kind of our own thing. We try to honour what came before, with the previous trilogy, but also the original 1968 movie."

'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' takes place many generations after the occurrences depicted in the 2017 movie. The story revolves around a young and courageous ape named Noa, who, despite being naive, embarks on a quest to rescue his abducted family after his peaceful eagle-raising community is attacked. Throughout his journey, Noa learns harsh realities about the past from encounters with an elderly orangutan and the first human he encounters, Nova/Mae. These revelations have significant implications for both his own future and the destiny of the planet.

"It's unique characters this time, it's younger characters. There's a kind of a youthful spirit. It's a bit more of an adventure. It's a road movie as we kind of travel across this landscape that's slowly disappearing, the ruins of our world,” stated Ball.

Similar to the previous films, 'Kingdom' utilizes motion-capture technology to animate the non-human roles. The actors dedicated six weeks to "ape school," where they trained with movement instructor Alain Gauthier, a former Cirque du Soleil artist and project supervisor.

"I'm very proud to, in a tiny way, be associated with its journey and sort of passing on the baton to the next generation and watching them create such an incredible movie," said Serkis, 60.

The worldwide release of 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' commences on May 8th.
