Paul Mescal on joining 'Gladiator 2': The opportunity is surreal,

Director Ridley Scott surprised many when he chose Paul Mescal to play Lucius, the lead in the highly anticipated 'Gladiator 2'. His decision was influenced by Mescal’s performance in the hit series "Normal People', particularly the emotional and physical intensity he brought to the role of Connell. Scott reportedly saw the depth in Mescal’s portrayal and joked, “That’s my guy for rolling around in the sand.”

The sequel is set over 20 years after the events of the original 'Gladiator', and Mescal steps into the role of Lucius, the nephew of Commodus and a protégé of Maximus. The film explores Lucius’s journey as he grapples with identity, revenge, and the legacy of the fallen hero Maximus, all while navigating the political intrigue of ancient Rome.

Mescal described the opportunity to work on the sequel as surreal, noting how much the original film influenced cinema. He shared that playing Lucius required him to balance honoring Maximus’s legacy while bringing his own character’s motivations and choices to life.

The film also boasts an impressive cast, including Pedro Pascal as a powerful Roman general and Denzel Washington as Macrinus, a former gladiator-turned-political leader.
