Marshall Brickman, the Oscar-winning screenwriter and creative force behind some of Woody Allen’s iconic films, Broadway's 'Jersey Boys,' and Johnny Carson's memorable comedy sketches has died at the age of 85. His daughter, Sophie Brickman, confirmed that he passed away on Friday in Manhattan.

According to The New York Times, the cause of death hasn't yet been provided by Sophie. Brickman rose to fame through his collaborations with Allen, beginning with 'Sleeper' in 1973. Together, they co-wrote classics such as 'Annie Hall' (1977), 'Manhattan' (1979), and 'Manhattan Murder Mystery' (1993). The screenplay for 'Annie Hall,' often celebrated as one of the smartest comedies ever made, earned Brickman and Allen the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. During his acceptance speech, Brickman humorously referenced a line from the film, saying, “I’ve been out here a week, and I still have guilt when I make a right turn on a red light.”

In 2017, Brickman described 'Annie Hall' as a vivid portrayal of life in New York during a particular era. In a conversation with Vanity Fair, he stated that the film's value lay in its authentic depiction of that time and culture.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Brickman grew up in Brooklyn after his parents, Jewish socialists Abram and Pauline, relocated there. He studied science and music at the University of Wisconsin before venturing into show business. His first major break came as a member of the folk group The Tarriers, replacing actor Alan Arkin.

Interestingly, an album Brickman recorded with his college roommate, Eric Weissberg, later became part of the soundtrack for the 1972 film 'Deliverance,' featuring the well-known track “Dueling Banjos.”

Marshall Brickman leaves behind a lasting legacy in film, television, and theater. According to India Today, he is survived by his wife Nina, daughters Sophie and Jessica, and five grandchildren.
