Rock: Various classic rock live albums in the past had their track order shuffled up and some 'live' albums even had various overdubs added in the studio to spruce up the sound. This BBC recording has appeared in shelves before, but fans of the group and completists will be delighted that the correct running order has been restored. However, there's only one extra track.
Machine Head ' one of the group's best albums ' gets proper live representation here. Previously, the group's best-known live album was
Made In Japan, originally released the same year. It overshadowed this set, but this new issue, with its nicely fleshed-out and raw sound also makes for fun listening. What's also interesting is that the CD booklet contains plenty of details about the evolution of the album in its various formats, right from the double vinyl set to CD. As for the music itself, the band sounds tight and the performances are delivered with the confidence of a band that was then on the threshold of superstardom.
Strange Kind Of Woman gets a lengthy take with Ritchie Blackmore's shredding on the axe as well as Gillan keeping time with some scat singing. Jam fans will enjoy the 22-minute version of
Space Truckin. And of course, which Deep Purple live set can be complete without their best-known track '
Smoke On The Water? Turn the bass up and play this loud.
