Mother in distress!
That’s what actress Vera Farmiga excels in playing, she tells BT, as she talks about her forthcoming film Orphan
She had earlier played the depressed mum of thedisturbed kid in Joshua and now in her forthcoming film Orphan, shes allset to play an alcoholic and guilt-ridden mom. The film revolves around Kate(Vera) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) whore coping with the tragic loss oftheir unborn child and so adopt a young girl Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). But soonafter that an alarming series of events begins to unfold. Directed by JaumeCollet-Serra and presented by Warner Bros Pictures, Orphan is all set to hittheatres on September 25. Here Vera shares her experiences of working in thisthriller.I howled and I wasterrified. I just couldnt believe the way things turned. It was justunique. Id never read anything like that before. It was veryuncomfortable and wonderfully weird and scary. I handed the script to myhusband, who is a really good barometer. He was nervously giggling and shriekingthe whole time he was reading it.I love the genreand I have never done anything like it. When I read the storyline, I wasshocked. Its very rare to find characters you can really believe in andwant to invest in that situation. I found what my character was going through tobe very compelling. Yes, it is amother-in-distress in both films, but I think the characters are suffering fromtwo different ailments.
In Joshua, its a woman going through apost-partum psychosis; whereas my character in Orphan has suffered through avery complex miscarriage and is trying to heal her family.Very much so. I dont how you could participatein this type of film, if you werent an enormous fan of this genre andlove being scared. I love films like The Tenant, Repulsion, RosemarysBaby... These kinds of films only work if the actors find themcompelling.Aryana plays my youngdaughter before we adopt the Orphan. She is hard of hearing and we wanted tomake it the easiest, fullest communication, so we all dabbled as much as wecould to learn sign language. I focused on learning the sign language too. Itwas crucial to my relationship with my daughter in the film to have thatcommunication between us, which you dont see her have with her father orher brother.Yes I would. Im likeeveryone else. I love Saturday nights with my best friend, a big bowl of pasta, wanting a good scare, something that will make you say, Listen, your lifeis not as bad as this. It could be worse. Ive played a lot of mothers in my movies. And I became a mother shortly after finishing this film. But I grew up withchildren, so I dont know if its any different.
