Morbius: Jared Leto unveils new trailer; fans decode easter eggs from Spider-Man to Venom and even possibility of the Multiverse

Sony released the trailer of the highly anticipated anti-hero film '

Morbius

', starring Oscar-winning actor and rocker Jared Leto. The star, who most recently played the Joker in Zack Snyder's '

Justice League

' and the 'Suicide Squad', will trade in the guns for fangs as he takes this new role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film is a dark addition to Sony's 'Spiderman' universe and tells the story of a scientist,

Michael Morbius

, suffering from a rare blood disease, who goes to great lengths to rid himself of his illness.

The trailer traces the journey of Morbius as he goes from being an ailing and vulnerable scientist to gaining superhuman strength, bat radar and even the ability of flight as he tip-toes around the blurred lines of morality.



Laced with some top-notch visual effects, the trailer also has a signature Marvel moment when Leto's character makes a pop culture reference to

Venom

, another character out of the Marvel universe. Following the trailer launch, fans took to social media to share their excitement and also got tweeting about the many easter eggs they spotted. While some say the trailer could hit at a crossover, other lauded the comic book accuracy of the character and still others expressed their excitement for the

multiverse

that is set to open up with '

Spider-Man

: No Way Home'.

The multiverse will further be explored in Benedict Cumberbatch's 'Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse of Madness' which will also feature Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff aka the Scarlet Witch.











'Morbius' is slated for a 2022 release.
