The highly anticipated spin-off of the Spanish series Money Heist, titled ‘Money Heist: Berlin’, made its debut on OTT on December 29. This new series delves into the backstory of Andrés de Fonollosa, better known as Berlin. It explores his life and relationships before the events of 'Money Heist'.
As a prequel, the series unfolds during Berlin's prime, depicting him as a ruthless, ambitious, and misogynistic mastermind planning a grand heist in Paris with his gang. The objective is a daring theft of 44 million euros worth of jewels from the largest auction house in the city.
Assisting Berlin in this ambitious plan is another genius strategist named Damian, played by Tristán Ulloa. The main cast includes fresh faces alongside Pedro Alonso, reprising his role as Berlin. Tristán Ulloa portrays Damian,
Samantha Siqueiros as Camille, Joel Sanchez as Bruce, Julio Pena as Roi, and
Michelle Jenner as the introverted hacker Keila. The narrative introduces a subplot involving Berlin's romantic entanglements amidst the complexities of the heist. Additionally, there's an appearance by Raquel Murillo, the detective from the original series, adding a connection to the Money Heist universe.

Despite a straightforward plot, this Netflix series falls short in terms of characterization. While Pedro Alonso delivers a lively portrayal of Berlin, some find it lacks the unsettling charm that made the original character so intriguing. The supporting characters also seem to pale in comparison to their counterparts from the original show, making the spin-off miss some of the charm that made Money Heist beloved.
