Met Gala 2026: Meghan Markle, Prince Harry skip event; Here’s what happened

The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted the Met Gala 2026 on May 4 (local time). The event once again lived up to its reputation as fashion’s biggest night. Prominent figures such as Manish Malhotra, Gauravi Kumari, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Anne Hathaway walked the iconic steps.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry absent

The absence of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stood out. Many had expected the couple to make their debut at the event this year. However they did not attend the 2026 edition held in New York City. The couple, who married in May 2018 after a two-year relationship, have yet to appear at the gala. Their absence disappointed fans who were hoping for a royal moment on the red carpet.


Anticipation had grown due to the couple’s connections with key figures at the event. Co-chairs Beyoncé and Venus Williams share friendly ties with them.
Additionally, Serena Williams, who is known to be close to Meghan, added to the speculation. Many believed 2026 could finally mark their appearance at the gala.

Reason for absence

While the reason for their absence remains unconfirmed, AOL report suggests that the couple recently returned from Australia. Historically, only a few British royals have attended the event.


Princess Beatrice attended in 2018 wearing a gown by Alberta Ferretti. Her look drew inspiration from Tudor-era fashion associated with Anne Boleyn.
The most royal and appearance is of Princess Diana in 1996. She wore a Dior slip dress designed by John Galliano. The look was completed with a sapphire-and-pearl choker and a Lady Dior handbag.

Met Gala theme and exhibition details

The gala serves as a fundraiser for the Costume Institute. It also marks the opening of the spring exhibition titled Costume Art. The exhibition explores different interpretations of the human body. Categories include the “Naked Body,” “Classical Body,” “Pregnant Body,” “Aging Body,” and “Mortal Body.” The dress code for the evening was “Fashion Is Art.” Designers were encouraged to interpret the theme creatively.

For viewers in India, the event began at 3 am on May 5. It was streamed live on the YouTube channel of Vogue.
