Justin Baldoni opens up about challenges of directing and acting in 'It Ends With Us'

Justin Baldoni recently shared insights into his experience directing and starring in the movie It Ends with Us. Speaking on Elizabeth Day’s How to Fail podcast, the 40-year-old actor revealed how the intense dual responsibilities of directing and portraying the complex character Ryle Kincaid took a toll on him.

Baldoni described directing as an isolating job, explaining that being in charge meant he had to handle endless questions and decisions while appearing composed. He admitted it was a lonely position where he couldn’t always express his anxieties or doubts, as he was expected to lead the team.

Adding to the challenge, Baldoni had to act in emotionally demanding scenes while directing the film. He recalled moments on set where the weight of his character's emotions became overwhelming. One particularly intense scene involved Ryle reacting with jealousy and heartbreak upon discovering a phone number on Lily’s phone. While the character doesn't physically harm Lily in the scene, his inner turmoil and dangerous tendencies are palpable. After filming this moment, Baldoni said he nearly broke down and had to step away to cry and release his pent-up emotions.

He credited somatic therapy for helping him manage the stress during filming. Techniques like shaking out emotions allowed him to cope with the psychological weight of playing Ryle, a character with deep-seated trauma and insecurities. Baldoni explained that embodying Ryle’s struggles, including feelings of unworthiness and guilt, was emotionally taxing and lingered with him even after filming.

For months, Baldoni said he would dream as his character and feel the emotional residue of Ryle’s pain. However, he eventually managed to separate himself from the role. Reflecting on the experience, he acknowledged the challenges but appeared to have found closure.
